An interaction design coded in Processing that captures the emotion and suffocating feeling of suffering mental illness. It is an endless interaction switching between two states to represent how mental illness sufferers rarely completely overcome their demons, but learn to manage them in a constructive way.
Designed in response to a sufferer of agoraphobia in the podcast This is About - “The Lesson”. The narrator, Geoff Anderson describes how he learned to manage and overcome his intense agoraphobia through connecting with other people over culture. He explains how it was initially suffocating and difficult to even leave home to how teaching about his Aborginal culture created a safe space, a state of peace that he has learned to cultivate and nurture to manage his intense agoraphobia.
Part of my process included creating storyboards and flow diagrams in pseudocode so I could understand and work out many problems with the logic prior to coding. In particular I was considering the feedback-response loop to inform the user how to interact with the piece. This overall made the process of coding much easier than going in blind.
