Terms & Conditions: Is Your Data Decent? is an experiential workshop that takes participants through the potential negative implications of freely sharing personal data whilst encourages preventative measures to protect personal data and urges a more critical stance on the subject of data.

In the current age of data, information about people is bought and sold for advertising, marketing to gain understand customers and maximise profits. Whilst it can be used to improve people’s lives and experiences, it also has the capacity to be used to personally
target advertisements, reinforce behaviours and create information echo chambers.

Designed as part of a transdisciplinary team, our workshop consisted of a poster series and two games, ‘This Game is Free* to Play’ and ‘How Long Can You Last?*’, all of which use humour and wit to highlight relatable situations that may be compromising or protecting personal data. This was complimented at the end of the experience with a call-to-action checklist for preventative measures for data protection.
Both games were designed to recreate the experience of discovering how one may be compromised, the colloquial ‘Oh Sh*t!’ moment. We recontexutalised formats of well known games Jenga and Exploding Kittens for their capacity to create tension and instead contextualised them around a user’s data being breached. By playing to this tension, it related to how personal data privacy is much like a house of cards that will easily collapse when too much is taken away.
Much of the design and research process for this project was spent mapping, interviewing and surveying people to understand the space regarding our initial area of interest - data literacy. For our target audience, we discovered an intense apathy around personal data privacy and a ‘blissful ignorance’ to potential consequences. This ultimately provided the motivation to pursue a means to create an experience that may shift those perspectives.
